Turin, 27th October 2009 - With the conclusion of MODBRAKE, a 4 years European project standardising the main modules of the rail brake system, an important step been taken to increase performance and interoperability in the European high-speed rail system, while at the same time reducing costs.
Representatives of the leading brake suppliers, rail system integrators, rail operators, and independent rail research institutes came together in Turin to present the final results of the MODBRAKE project. MODBRAKE - Innovative Modular Brake Concepts for the Integrated European High-Speed Railway System - addresses one of the most important subsystems of rail vehicles by proposing standards for brake modules and their interfaces for the next generation of high-speed trains and universal locomotives. With this vision the project follows the approach of the Integrated Project MODTRAIN, which ended in 2008.
The current situation in the brake supply sector is characterised by the unnecessary and costly diversity of brake systems design, testing, validation and maintenance procedures. To reduce this complexity and therefore the costs, the project developed specifications for the modularisation of the brake system. The brake modules are interchangeable in terms of functions while the modules itself are still specific to each manufacturer so as to enable technological progress. "Modbrake paved the way for the practical implementation and validation of technical solutions for standardised brake modules, this is an important step towards the interoperability of the European rail system", said Adam Grodzicky from the European Commission at the Turin conference. "The specifications for standardisation have already been submitted to European standardisation bodies to produce new standards."
Dear Madam,
Dear Sir,
The consortium of the MODBRAKE project, a partly EU funded R&D project under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission, is pleased to invite you to its final conference that will take place on 28th of October 2009 in Turin (Italy).
The project achievements will be presented by the partners during one conference day. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend a demonstration of a the new MODBRAKE brake Modules that the project developed.
Please find here the relevant documents:
We kindly ask you to register by 10th of October 2009. You will receive more detailed information on the logistics (exact location and hotel recommendation) by mid September.
We are looking forward to meeting you at the conference!
On behalf of the MODBRAKE consortium:
With kind regards
Helene Köpf
Railway Systems - Technical Affairs Manager
The MODBRAKE kick-off meeting was held on the 27th of June 2006 in Brussels with the presence of the European Commission.
